European Union Approves Ecodesign Directive Targeting Servers and Storage Systems

The European Union has decided on 21 October to implement regulations on the manufacturing and servicing of servers and storage equipment for the benefit of the environment – in popular terms called the Ecodesign directive. It seeks to limit the environmental impact of servers and storage systems.

The directive mandates OEMs to supply their security patches for servers and storage systems free of charge from 1 March 2021. OEMs must also provide all firmware updates for these systems to TPMs no later than two years after a server or storage system was sold the first time within the EU.

It is an important step for the end-users and for the environment. The fact that the OEMs intellectual property in the form of firmware and manuals are made available will help extend the lifetime of servers and storage systems and make the tech refresh cycle longer.
